India, The Bushes’ Family Cat Passed Away
Yesterday, January 4, 2009, India, the Bushes’ family cat died in the White House. India was 18 years old when she passed away.
The Bush family got the cat when twin daughters Jenna and Barbara were 9 years old. Barbara named the cat India after the former Texas Rangers outfielder Ruben Sierra, who was nicknamed “El Indio.” President Bush is a former co-owner of the Texas Rangers. India was a black American Shorthair.
When Barbara and Jenna moved away from home to attend college, India remained in the White House with President Bush and Laura Bush.
Press secretary, Sally McDonough said in a statement, “The President, Mrs. Bush, and Barbara and Jenna are deeply saddened by the passing of their cat India.”
Losing a beloved cat is difficult. I wish the Bush family the best during this difficult time.
