A new survey by Harris Interactive and comissioned by Wellness indicates more than half of pet owners don’t know what they are feeding their pets, despite that awful pet food recall last year.

A total of 1,305 pet owners in the United States took part in the on-line survey in the month of August, with 906 dog owners and 783 cat owners.

While two-thirds of pet owners participating in the survey indicated they feed their pets as members of their families, only 56% said they often or always read human food labels and only 38% of dog owners and cat owners said they often or always read their pet’s food labels.

Additionally, 56% of dog and cat owners admit they do not know what federal agency is charged with pet food quality, yet 56% of dog owners say they are concerned the food they feed their dogs contains ingredients they would not want their dogs eating.

In addition, 48% of cat owners and 44% of dog owners admitted they did not know the first ingredient in their pet’s food when asked.

Wellness offers some suggestions for ensuring your dog or cat is getting a proper diet. They suggest lookingat the ingredient list and making sure you understand the ingredients in the food you feed your companion. They recommend meat be the first ingredient in the list, NOT meat or poultry by-products. They recommend other good ingredients to have in pet food include wholesome fruits and vegetables, de-boned chicken, and whole fish. Finally, they suggest avoiding common allergies to food, such as wheat glutten or wheat.
