Did You Know *This* About Your Veterinarian?

Published by pinkink at 12:15 am under News, cats Edit This

Ever compain about the high cost of your vet bills? I certainly have, but not to my vet himself, of course! However, I’ve always figured the vet is worth the high price because they keep our beloved pets healthy, which is extremely important to me, and I’m guessing is equally as important to you!

I ran across this article today on Web Vet, and thought I’d highlight a few points from it. Did you know these things about your vet?

1. Vets are trained as thoroughly as doctors are! Veterinarians have to go through four years of undergraduate college, then four years of veterinarian school to become a vet. On top of all of that education, vets are required to pass both state and national exams to practice animal medicine.

What may be even more surprising to you is if a veterinarian decides to specialize in a certain field, such as cardiology or behavioral medicine, he or she must do an internship and residency after completing vet school, which are extremely competitive.

Another surprising fact is that there are only 28 vet schools in the entire United States, so they are statistically harder to get into than med schools are!

2. Vets are more than just medical professionals for your pet The article I read emphasizes the fact that vets are no only knowledgeable, but they are often concerned about each owner’s pet/s.

I have found this to be the case. I have not met many vets who do not have a deep love for all animals and are concerned about my cats’ health and well-being.

3. It’s not really about the money: Believe it or not, while vets have to receive as much education as doctors for human medicine do, doctors actually make more than vets do. In fact, the article I read said vets typically make around $50,000 in private practice and around $70,000 if they work for a government agency.

So, the next time you take your cat to see your veterinarian, you might remember these facts. Remember to let your vet know you appreciate everything he or she does for animals, including your cats!
